Due for a summer 2015 release, the Mitsubishi Triton (known as the L200 in the UK) sets a new benchmark for quality. It looks poised to leave many of its rivals in the shade when it comes to both style and sheer pulling power. Mitsubishi has a strong reputation for building tough, hard-wearing utility vehicles, and the new Triton promises to be one of the Japanese manufacturer’s most successful trucks yet.
The vehicle certainly looks impressive from the first glance, with an imposing road presence well suited to challenging conditions. The cavernous loading bay is 1.5cm deeper than its predecessor and has a total width of 1.47 metres – more than enough room to carry even the bulkiest cargo with ease. Indeed, the truck can carry more than a tonne in payload and will easily tow a braked weight of 3.1 tonnes.
A new 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine has been added to the range. The new unit is machined from aluminium and incorporates sophisticated technology, such as common-rail injection and variable valve timing to deliver optimal performance. All models above the entry-level 4Life have engines which generate 178bhp and reach a peak torque of 430Nm to sprint from 0-60mph in around ten seconds. The steering has been adjusted to be far more responsive in all versions of the L200/Triton for an even more engaging drive.
The advanced 4x4 system is arguably the best in its class, and makes the new Mitsubishi the only pick-up truck that can be driven using two-wheel or four-wheel drive on any terrain. Even on tarmac, the ride is soft and supple. Drivers who select the Super Select 4x4 system will benefit from the 60:40 torque split that minimises understeer when cornering.
Underneath the muscle and might of the model, the spacious cabin has evidently been designed with comfort in mind. The seating reflects the generous space, with plentiful leg and head room to enjoy. At the driver’s position, the cockpit places vital controls within easy reach, alongside a touchscreen display mounted on the central console that boasts satellite navigation.
